In the early ‘90s, the low-budget slasher CLASS OF ’93 is released to scathing reviews and fan indifference. Its cast of young and up-and-coming actors and actresses, hopeful for a hit, watch their “big breaks” fizzle. Although the movie seems destined to be forgotten, it soon gains a cult following through late night screenings and VHS rentals. When hip director wunderkind, Taryn Quint, announces her plans to make a sequel to the picture, the original cast and crew is contacted to reprise their roles. With a larger budget, a marquee director at the helm, and a pop princess in the cast, expectations are high. Struggling actor, Mace Hunter, sees the movie as a do-over…a chance to once again make his mark in the industry and to forget the painful lessons he learned at the hand of the first film’s director. But not everyone is happy about the new movie. It isn’t long before Taryn receives threatening messages urging her to abandon the film. And then the murders begin. As the cast and crew are butchered one-by-one, the survivors try to stay alive long enough to discover who would kill to stop the SEQUEL.

Sequel Mark Allan Gunnells 9780615649627 Books

Think of Sequel as the marriage of Scream 3’s movie-within-a-movie concept and the “high school reunion” angle of movies like Slaughter High.

Back in the 90s, a slasher was made called Class of ’93. It was a huge flop then, but has since gained a cult following. So reuniting the cast for a sequel ten years later seems like a great idea Only someone doesn’t want this sequel—or its masked killer—resurrected from the dead….

Now that’s how you formulate a slasher. Mark delivers all the slasher staples and self-aware banter you could hope for—after all, these characters all starred in a slasher film, so they know the deal. There are red herring. Evenly paced kills throughout. A “slasher movie within a slasher” structure. A whodunit mystery. Plus, not one but two gay characters, male and female.

You pretty much want to blast through Sequel. It’s a deliciously quick read. And taking into consideration the title of the book and its overall homage to slasher sequels, you best bet that the ending leaves the promise of a sequel. In fact, a sequel is pretty much a necessity!

Sequel Mark Allan Gunnells 9780615649627 Books Reviews

Sequel, by Mark Allan Gunnells, is pure, slashery fun! It reads like a classic movie from the eighties complete with colorful, likeable. and well-written characters, plentiful red herrings, and good old fashioned murders. It is like Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None (the book that the film Ten Little Indians is based on) meets Friday the 13th. It keeps you guessing who the killer is as characters are eliminated one by one in really inventive ways.

I have also read The Summer of Winters by Mark, which is a great coming of age story, and would highly recommend this one as well. It's a real page turner and pure entertainment. A great summer read. It's got a little of everything horror, humor, drama, and mystery. What's not to like?

Buy this one, and read it! Or Lester Freckles might just pay you a visit...
I'm not overly eloquent so I'll get to the point.

Mark Allan Gunnells loves '80's slasher flicks. At least the first one or two of the iconic franchises and some of the more obscure films. That shows in "Sequel". This story, as you can tell, is written with that love in mind. Reading this book feels like a sequel. You actually feel like you've already seen the first film referenced in this work. It contains the red herrings, jump scares, and lovable/hatable characters you find in virtually every sequel.

Buy this book. You won't regret it.
Mark Allan Gunnells, for me, has become quite the go-to author. Luckily Gunnells' longer fiction is finally becoming available. So, of course, I was excited to break the binding on SEQUEL. What a joyride. Wow! Many interesting characters, several story arcs, and some tongue-in-cheek slasher fiction goodness. See, Gunnells' brings 80's era slasher films from the silver screen to the printed (and digital) page.

SEQUEL is a lot of fun. I suggest you check out this short novel, along with other books by Mark Allen Gunnells.
I have read a lot of Mr. Gunnells work and the more he writes the better he gets! I haven't been disappointed by anything by him yet! And the Sequel is no different! The whole time I was reading Sequel I was thinking how great it would be if this book were to be turned into a MOVIE! This is not the normal teen slasher setting! You can tell from the beginning that the author put a lot of time and heart into developing the chacters in this novel! So if you are looking for a great slasher horror that doesn't have dim witted kids in it than this book is for you! I for one cannot wait until his next book!
Finally gave in and gave this one a read. Was not let down at all. This is the perfect slasher novel and probably one of the best on . It does a great job of taking old school horror and mixing it with the current trend of teen horror. I hope this is adapted into a movie one day because I'd definitely watch it, but for now I guess I'll just have to re-read this one every so often. All around awesome!
Mark Allan Gunnells' new novel, SEQUEL, is yet another great piece of fiction from this budding young writer! I've read virtually everything Mark has had published, surely all of his longer works, and I have to say that he just keeps getting better and better. For one, his prose is so simple and easy-to-read, easy-to-follow---and I don't mean that in a disparaging way at all---that he just effortlessly draws you in to his tales, carrying you through the clever plots and sub-plots, before leveling you with some unexpected twist or other at their conclusion! This guy makes writing seem easy. And his latest story---about an enterprising director who is given the green light to do a sequel to a horror flick that bombed ten years before, only to become a cult classic---has all of Mark's usual suspects. This one is so cleverly written, I think he must have had major horror movie screenplay in mind! And I, for one, hope it goes that route! Great horror flick...err, tale!
A bad slasher film, that garners a cult following. A sequel, planned for the 10th anniversary of the original. A psycho killer, who wants to stop production of the new movie.

These are the basic plot points for Mark Allan Gunnells fantastic novel Sequel. It seems simple enough but, in the hands of Mr. Gunnells, it rises above typical slasher tropes. Oh, the tropes are there; this is an homage, after all. How could there not be a masked killer, stalking and murdering his victims, one by one?

But...

Gunnells greatest strength is his ability to write fantastic characters, and it is this that elevates Sequel to "must be read" status. Gunnells makes you care about his characters, which makes what happens that much more horrifying. There are some surprising character arcs, as well as some surprising deaths. Oh, poor...well, you'll find out.

There are also enough suspects to keep you guessing until the end. There was a point when I thought I had it figured out, but Gunnells had another twist waiting just around the corner.

If you like slasher movies, suspenseful tales, or just great writing, I highly recommend Sequel.
